Air Filter Ratings for HVAC Systems MERV Rating

Air Filter Ratings for HVAC Systems

Most RV and Mobile home filters you want to stay on the low end of the scale, if you have allergies, to pollen and cat dander and need extra air filtration then you should check into buying a standalone filter system for your home,

Some HVAC systems do not like to have the high rating filters as they need to have the most air flow you can put into them, so keep the filters clean and changed then your furnace wont trip out on high heat or the air conditioner won't freeze up due to the lack of air flow.

Mobile Home, Modular Home and RV Systems require a MERV rating 1 to 8

MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value

MERV is a standardized rating system that measures how effectively an air filter captures particles of varying sizes—from 0.3 to 10 microns.

🧪 What MERV Ratings Actually Measure

  • Developed by: The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE)

  • Purpose: To rate a filter’s worst-case performance at removing airborne particles

  • Scale: Ranges from 1 to 20, with higher numbers indicating better filtration

📊 MERV Rating Breakdown

MERV Rating Captures Particles Like Typical Use
1–4 Pollen, dust mites, carpet fibers Basic residential filters
5–8 Mold spores, household dust, concrete dust Standard residential & commercial
9–12 Legionella, lead dust, coal dust High-quality residential, labs
13–16 Bacteria, smoke, sneeze droplets Hospitals, clean rooms
17–20 Viruses, carbon dust, combustion smoke Surgical suites, pharmaceutical labs

⚠️ Important Notes for HVAC Systems

  • Higher MERV ≠ Always Better: Filters rated MERV 13+ can restrict airflow in systems not designed for them.

  • Residential Sweet Spot: Most homes do well with MERV 8–12, balancing filtration and system efficiency.

  • HEPA Filters: These exceed MERV 16 and capture 99.97% of particles at 0.3 microns, but require specialized systems.
