Replacing a Furnace Blower Motor Step by Step Guide

Replacing a Furnace Blower Motor Step by Step Guide

#1 Turn off all power to the furnace and remove screws in the

front of the blower assembly and disconnect the blower

motor wires.

#2 pull and wiggle side to side and slide blower unit toward

the front of the furnace

#3 take the screws that mount the blower motor to the blower assembly, on the opposite side of the motor looking at the blower wheel you will see a square head bolt that needs to be loosened to allow the blower motor shaft to slide our of the blower wheel hub once the blower motor is removed then you can reach in and remove the blower wheel,

NOTE on some blower assemblies a half-curved piece of

metal will need to be taken out to allow the blower wheel to

be removed, depending on the size of the blower wheel

some you can squeeze by the frame.

#4 Power wash or take to a car wash and spray with 409 or

simple green and wash the dirt lint, hair and oils from the

blower wheel and blower wheel housing try to get up inside

and wash as much as you can see, sometimes it takes me 2

times as the first time doesn’t always come clean so re spray

with degreaser and pressure wash a second time.

#5 Inspect every blower wheel blades to make sure they are

not lose or missing, if so, the blower wheel will be out of

balance and it needs to be replaced or rebalanced

#6 let dry completely before Re-installing mounting screws and hooking up power.

Once the motor is bolted solid to the assembly take your

fingers one on each side of the blower assembly and center

the blower wheel on the motor shaft (the blower wheel will slide left to right on the motor shaft) so there is equal distance on both sides of the wheel to the blower assembly

frame, Tighten down the square bolt head on the blower

wheel hub so the bolt is on the flat spot of the motor shaft

spin the blower wheel and make sure is in still round, if it

needs a little tweaking as the blower wheel is elongated you

can take some small pieces of wood and go around in

between the blower frame and the blower assembly frame

small adjustments to bring it back as round as possible,

Once the blower wheel turns free then go back and double

check the square head bolt is tight and the motor brackets

are tight, re install the capacitor on the blower housing and

tie up all wires to prevent them from being sucked into the

turning blower parts.

#7 Slide back into rails on the furnace and hook back up the

power connections re install the mounting screws and turn

on power and test operation

#8 Turn on power and do a test run.
